The sentence structure capacity for meaning

The article considers a meaning volume of the sentence structure, which is defined as an increase in the semantic load with additional meanings under the principle of language economy. A speaker plays a relevant role in this process selecting the characteristics of a real situation, their interpretation and further linguistic representation. The research is done within a cognitive approach to language study, according to which we need to reveal the interplay of cognitive and linguistic structures that underlies linguistic construing. This approach leads to revealing specifics of meaning volume of the sentence structure. It also lets various knowledge types be described as they suggest an increase in the semantic load of the sentence structure. The methodology of this research is based on cognitive modelling. A sentence as a complex linguistic unit is meant for declarative and procedural knowledge representation. Procedural knowledge includes such aspects, as a cognitive dominant, a cognitive monitoring and a cognitive control. A cognitive dominant correlates with speaker’s intentions and covers the most relevant objective characteristics at the present moment, which correlate with communicative goals. A cognitive monitoring is presented by various strategies of declarative knowledge processing. A cognitive control is a focus of speaker’s attention, aimed at choosing the most effective means for achieving communication goals. Among the strategies for declarative knowledge processing, a modification of the categorial meaning of the verb, metonymic, metaphoric and metaphtonymic models are highlighted. In addition to them we also propose a procedure for activating different sign systems, defined in the research as a multimodality procedure. The theoretical significance of this study lies in deepening the theory of syntactic representation. The results obtained can be used to analyze the semantic dimension of the sentence structure on the material of other languages. The prospect of the research consists in the possibility of analyzing human cognitive activity, taking into account the role of different types of knowledge in meaning processing.
