The article is dedicated to the analysis of the religious component in the political discourse of the Carlists during the First Carlist War in Spain. It is shown that from the very beginning of the conflict, the religious factor was used in the propaganda of supporters of Don Carlos to justify the uprising against the government in Madrid. The source for this study are the texts of 103 policy documents of Spanish Carlism (manifestos, appeals, etc.). The authors of these texts were Don Carlos himself, as well as a number of other representatives of the top officers of the Carlist movement. Time frame of the study: October 1, 1833 — July 14, 1840. In these texts, lexical units (nouns and adjectives, as well as substantive groups) that were used in relation to the opponents of the Carlists were identified. 19 lexical units were recorded that belong to the semantic field “religion” and are used to create an image of the enemy. These lexical units are used 40 times in the analyzed texts. The most common lexemes are “impío” (“godless”) (11 times) and “impiedad” (“godlessness”) (7 times). It is shown that lexical units related to the semantic field “religion” combine with political vocabulary. Thus, the adjective “impío” is used twice with the lexeme “revolución” (“revolution”). It is concluded that in the language of Spanish Carlism during the period under study there was no clear boundary between political and religious discourse.
