Results of the international scientific conference “78th Herzen Readings. Foreign Languages”

Abstract

The article summarizes the results of the international scientific conference “78^th Herzen Readings. Foreign languages”. During the conference, pressing issues in modern linguistics, cognitive science, hermeneutics, cultural studies, phraseology, translation studies, literature, and intercultural communication were discussed. A key focus was placed on issues of the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages in secondary and higher education, innovative technologies for teaching foreign languages, as well as research in the field of foreign languages for academic and professional purposes.

In 2025, in addition to the traditional ten sections (“Text and discourse in the paradigm of contemporary humanities”, “Cognitive and pragmatic aspects of language and speech”, “Cognitive approach to semantics”, “Applying methods of cultural linguistics to study phraseology as a reflection of a nation’s mentality”, “Theory, practice and didactics in translation/interpreting”, “Variation in language and speech: Social and cultural factors”, “Current issues of cross-cultural communication theory”, “Learning and teaching oriental languages”, “Teaching foreign languages in secondary and tertiary education: models and solutions”, “Research in the field of foreign language for academic and professional purposes”), a meeting of the updated section “Hermeneutics and narratology in synchrony and diachrony” was held. The linguistic scope of the conference encompassed 15 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Serbian, Finnish, Estonian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Arabic. The article presents briefly an overview of the key issues discussed at the breakout sessions.
