Single- and Double-Dominant Communicative Strategies in West and East German Historical (Biographical) Discourse

The article deals with single- and double-dominant communicative strategies aimed at realizing the overall communicative intention of explanation as well as communicative tactics realizing these strategies in West and East German historical biography discourse. The strategies and tactics are analyzed on the base of three discourse competences of the narrative: the reference, creative and receptive ones. The data used in the study includes historical biographies written at the same time in the GDR and the FRG and devoted to the same historical personalities. Within the overall argumentative narrative strategy, more particular strategies have been singled out, namely the strategies of informing, explanation, evaluation, self-presentation and objectivation. The strategies of informing and explanation can be classified as single-dominant since they are based on one discourse competence: the reference one. The strategies of evaluation, self-presentation and objectivation are double-dominant since each of them is based on two discourse competences: reference and creative competences for the evaluation strategy, and creative and receptive competences for the self-presentation and objectivation strategies. Within the particular strategies, the author has singled out various communicative tactics which allow for realizing these strategies: the tactics of rational argumentation, appealing to personal authorities, appealing to group authorities, subjective argumentation, describing evaluation criteria, ascribing evaluative characteristics, comparison, appealing to the possible past, objection, attracting attention, personalization, indirect address, and indicating uncertainty. The historical (biographical) discourse has been proved to possess a dialogical and convergent character, which accounts for the elements of theoretical (academic as well as popular-scientific) discourse and narrative discourse combined in it.
