Profiling participants of intellectual competitions in foreign languages: Evidence from the Herzen English language Olympiad for high school students

Abstract

The Herzen olympiad in foreign Languages for high school students is a nationwide intellectual competition designed to identify, support, and develop linguistically and pedagogically gifted students. In the 2024/25 academic year, the olympiad was recognized as a first-level competition and included in the official list by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, granting its winners and prize-winners substantial admission benefits to leading Russian universities, including exemption from entrance examinations in relevant disciplines. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the socio-demographic profiles of final-stage participants (age, gender, and geographic distribution) alongside a detailed linguistic assessment of their creative written submissions. Special emphasis is placed on the discourse analysis of the essays authored by winners and prize-winners, with the focus on lexical diversity, grammatical accuracy, textual coherence, and creative expression. The results of the analysis allowed authors to create a collective speech portrait of the high school student who successfully participates in intellectual competitions in foreign languages. The findings hold practical implications for foreign language educators working with gifted learners, task developers, and organizers of academic competitions. Additionally, the study’s insights may inform the enhancement of olympiad preparation techniques, contributing to the broader advancement of talent development in language education.
