Intellectual competitions for schoolchildren in foreign languages as a subject of scientific research

This review article presents the results of a scientific study conducted with a grant from the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia and aimed at improving the system for selecting talented young people who demonstrate high achievements in foreign languages to enter higher education institutions.
The Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (St. Petersburg) has many years of experience organizing the Herzen Olympiad for schoolchildren in foreign languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, German, and French), which is included in the list of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. In 2025, due to the Olympiad’s upgraded status to a “listed” Olympiad and the need to meet current challenges, a comprehensive scientific study was conducted. The result was an updated conceptual model for intellectual competitions for schoolchildren in foreign languages, adapted to the needs of a pedagogical university and the current generation of participants.
This study examines intellectual competitions for schoolchildren organized by universities through the lens of unified conceptual approaches to their modeling, continuity, and the specialized focus of foreign language education within the school-language pedagogical university system. Particular attention is paid to the profile of participants and the specifics of working with the new generation of schoolchildren (“digital generation”). Given the limited theoretical foundation available on this topic, the researchers drew on their own extensive research and proposed a methodology for comparative analysis of university Olympiad models listed by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
The materials of this review article can be used to improve pre-university training systems and the selection of talented young people for language pedagogical universities.
