Herzen Olympiad for schoolchildren in foreign languages: Responding to the challenges of the time

The article summarizes the experience of holding the Herzen Olympiad for schoolchildren in foreign languages (Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, St. Petersburg) under the auspices of the Russian Council of School Olympiads: in the status of Olympiads of II and III levels (2013–2024) and the level I Olympiad (2025). The article considers the evolution of the model — mission, target audience, concept, structure and content of the Herzen Olympiad for schoolchildren in foreign languages in response to the change in its status and the need to take into account the format (online and/or in-person), the increase in the number of participants, the characteristics of schoolchildren of the so-called “digital” generation, new geopolitical realities, a surge of interest in oriental languages against the background of its decline in European languages (Spanish, German, French). In particular, in response to modern challenges of the time, in 2025, the Chinese language was included in the nomenclature of foreign languages, in which the Herzen Olympiad is traditionally held. In 2025, the Herzen Olympiad model was updated conceptually and substantively due to the inclusion of linguistic and linguacultural components, genre diversity, and the use of blog and storytelling formats in demand among schoolchildren of the “digital” generation. Successful testing of the updated model of the Herzen Olympiad for schoolchildren in five foreign languages in 2025 testifies to its universality and the possibility of application to both European and Eastern languages. All of the above allows the Herzen Olympiad to position itself as keeping up with the times and as a springboard for entering university for schoolchildren gifted in the field of foreign languages and motivated to study in the linguistic direction of bachelor’s degree preparation.
