Herzen University Spanish Language School Olympiad: Portrait of a participant in the 2025 final round

Résumé

The article attempts to characterise a typical participant in the final round of the Herzen University Spanish Language School Olympiad (Saint- Petersburg, 2025) due to the increase in status (Level I of the Russian Council of School Olympiads). As a result of the analysis of the works of 30 participants (students from grades 7 to 11), it was found that the participants coped best with the integrated listening and reading comprehension competition, although they showed that they struggled to clearly distinguish between main and supporting information, resulting in inaccuracies in the selection of keywords for the audio text. A similar problem (determining the main and supporting information) is also observed in the tasks of the reading comprehension competition that require extracting specific information from the written text. The results of the grammar competition showed that those Spanish language phenomena that have no analogues in the Russian language continue to be difficult for Spanish language learners. The vocabulary and country‑specific knowledge competition turned out to be the most difficult, which allowed us to record a low level of linguistic (contextual) guess of the participants. The writing competition allowed us to establish good writing skills in Spanish, but revealed errors related to coherence and failure to meet the requirements of the assignment. Thus, it was found that the greatest difficulty faced by the participants in the final round of the 2025 Herzen University Spanish Language School Olympiad was working with a text in Spanish, involving finding different types of information and establishing links between parts of the whole text. The data obtained during the study on the portrait of a typical participant in the final round will be used in the preparation of the 2026 Herzen University Spanish Language School Olympiad.
