Herzen Olympiad for schoolchildren in French 2025: Results, participant portrait, prospects

Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive review of the concept and results of the final round of the Herzen Olympiad for Schoolchildren in French in 2025, caused by the need to analyze the testing of its updated model in connection with the increase in the status of the Olympiad (Level 1 of the Russian Council of School Olympiads). The article covers the mission of the Herzen Olympiad, its target audience, the concept of the current year’s Olympiad and approaches to the selection of Olympiad materials. The main attention is paid to a comprehensive analysis of the results of the participants in the final round of the Herzen Olympiad for Schoolchildren in French in 2025 and the compilation of their collective portrait. Statistical data are provided for each competition and individual tasks (average score, percentage of task completion). The authors analyze the mistakes made by the participants, and make assumptions about their causes (generational and age characteristics, unfamiliar task format, discrepancy between the level of preparation and the Olympiad requirements, non-target audience of the Olympiad). The level of preparation of the participants in the 2025 Herzen Olympiad for Schoolchildren is compared with 2019, when a similar diagnosis was conducted; a conclusion is made about the improvement in the quality of preparation of participants for listening, reading (individual tasks) and essay competitions, while difficulties in completing tasks on grammar (transformation of a grammatical construction in accordance with the instructions) and vocabulary (reconstruction of a text based on the context) remain. In conclusion, a conclusion is made about the successful testing of the updated model of the final round of the 2025 Herzen Olympiad for Schoolchildren in French: the Olympiad made it possible to identify gifted and motivated schoolchildren — potential students of linguistic and pedagogical areas of bachelor’s degree training. In the future, it is planned to give the Olympiad a greater pedagogical focus.
