Herzen German Language Olympiad of schoolchildren 2025: Results, challenges, portrait of a participant

Abstract

The article methodologically analyses the results of the final stage of the Herzen Olympiad of schoolchildren in German language in 2025. The authors consider the quantitative composition and characterize the participants of the Olympiad. The article presents statistical characteristics of the performance of each task by all participants, as well as by the selected groups of participants. The authors of the article analyse the success of task completion based on the average percentage of completion of all tasks of the section (contest), as well as on the results of each task completion by participants who scored different numbers of points. In each section (contest) of the final round of the Olympiad tasks, the tasks that participants with different scores coped with well, as well as the tasks that caused difficulties, are identified. The article describes possible reasons for erroneous answers, and on their basis determines the skills and activities that can be considered sufficient for the participants of the Olympiad, as well as the skills and activities that cannot be considered sufficient for the participants of the Olympiad with different levels of preparation. The participants of the final round of the Herzen Olympiad in German coped well with receptive tasks and worse with productive tasks, the most difficult were the tasks of grammar and vocabulary contests. The results of the final round showed that the participants of the 2025 Olympiad have insufficiently formed grammatical skills required at the advanced level of German language proficiency and the ability to identify in the text and competently use contextual supports for understanding the meaning of the statement and reconstructing its elements. The participants’ ignorance of grammatical and lexical regularities of the German language also affected the success of essay writing.
