The role of colour terms in Dino Buzzati’s “The Tartar Steppe”

The purpose of the study is to present an argument for the meaningforming role of colour terms in Dino Buzzati’s novel “The Tartar Steppe”. Its relevance is due to the undiminishing interest in text-forming categories and individual styles of specific authors. The article analyzes lexical items with the meaning of colour in the novel “The Tartar Steppe”. The author’s colour designations are considered as a stylistic category and are studied in their paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations, the dominants of the author’s colour palette, their semantic and grammatical features are revealed. The paper’s scientific novelty is determined by the research material, since Buzzati’s operas remain poorly studied from a linguistic point of view and lies in the fact that for the first time the features of the author’s colour palette as a meaningforming category in the novel “The Tartar Steppe” are revealed. The following methods were used during the study: the continuous sampling method (when collecting material), the linguistic analysis method (when classifying the identified colour terms), the quantitative method (when identifying the dominants of the author’s palette), and the contextual method (when identifying the syntagmatic specificity of colour designations). The conducted study allows to conclude that achromatic colour designations dominate in the author’s colour palette within the framework of the studied literary text and to assert that the core of the author’s palette participates in the formation of the internal tension of the semantic plan. In addition, the results of the analysis of the paradigmatic relations of colour designations indicate the possibility of identifying three matrices (based on attributive, substantive and processual feature), with the matrix based on the attributive feature being the most productive. The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of using its results in the literary texts linguistic analysis courses.
